Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra, Musiikkitalo • Sweden Saturday 24th November 2018
The beloved music from Greece's premier composer - now on the European Tour for the first time. The Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis - not least known for his film music for "Zorba" - formed his own orchestra in 1997, along with musicians who have long played his music and have become familiar with his works. With the help of daughter Margarita, a program consisting of Theodorakis most popular melodies was put together, as The Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra interprets in organizational setting. The orchestra is now on its first European tour under the direction of Margarita Theodorakis, where we hear the most well-known songs from Greece's greatest now-living composer. On stage there are the well-known singers Manolis Lidakis and Sofia Papzoglou, and the music from "Zorba" will of course not be missing. Mikis Theodorakis, born 1925, has composed over 1000 songs and gave his first concert in 1942. In addition to "Zorba" (1964) he is also behind the film music of "Z - He lives" (1969) and "Serpico" (1973). He has also been noted as composer of the Mauthausentrilogin, his perhaps strongest work, described as "the most beautiful in the musical way ever written about the Holocaust." During his long lifetime, Theodorakis has consistently been opponent of oppressive regimes, and became a protesting protest against the Greek juntan brutal regime in 1967-74. He was imprisoned and tortured for his conviction, but was released after international pressure. After some time in exile he has spent several periods in the Greek parliament.
